Train from Chichester to Swanick, then down hill to the Solent. Through woods and fields before ‘Eating Out to Help Out’ in a windy pub garden by the sea in Hill Head. Every table full, inside and out. Not sure who we were helping the pubs or the bugs.
Into Gosport and the start of one of the largest natural harbour systems in the world. The whole area was formed when the ice age passed and rising seas flooded river valleys. The features are known as Rias.
We took the ferry to Portsmouth, the only UK city placed on an island. Then another hop onto Hayling Island to follow a disused railway line back to the mainland. Not quite within my ‘rules’ but it was a brilliant ride.
